Our digestive tracts and microbiome are so very important to our health, more so than even the 'experts' expected. More is being learned about how it effects our over all health every day. This book explains it all in an easily understandable way. Has information on so very many health conditions, just look at the index, I am sure you will find what you are looking for there. Also contains information on important diagnostic tests that I have not seen anywhere else, and comparisons of labs, very helpful indeed. If you have or think you might have: fibromyalgia, Celiac disease, Metabolic syndrome, Chronic Fatigue, Migraine Headaches, Depression, bi-polar, diabetes or any number of other serious health conditions and 'modern' medicine is not helping you, then you need this book. This is about 'Functional medicine' that treats our whole bodies and over all health instead of just putting a band-aid on symptoms. I found it very interesting to see how research has changed, by looking at the extremely complex performance of the human digestive system, in a systemic way. It is extremely technical and I, for one, did not try to memorize, the very large number of enzymes and various biochemical entities that Dr Lipski and her fellow researchers are studying in their complex interaction. One interesting point that is made is that the same problematic symptoms may be due to very different causes calling for very different treatments and that the same underlying problematic causes may and do in fact, evolve into different problems. Dr Lipski explains the differences in this fourth edition v the previous one. Scientific knowledge doubles between every two and three years, so that knowledge is twentyfive times what it was when the first edition was published.I hope that when we go for consultation with our gastro specialist, that he or she have read and understood Dr Lipski's book! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Needs better editing. *by D***S on Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2013* This is a 'go to' book recommended by experts. I enjoyed the first half of the book which focused on digestive wellness in general. The latter part of the book hones in on specific illnesses which would be useful for patients looking at customized recommendations. However, many of the recommendations seem like the 'same ole laundry list' but I suppose all sick guts probably need similar basic treatments.
