Although nearly the width of a quart ziploc, they are just short enough to easily insert into the bag before the food. They are heavy enough to ensure the bag doesn't float (unless it has an unusually large air bubble), while orienting it vertically (for good water circulation) if there is even a small amount of air from not using a vacuum sealer.
