What do the strength numbers mean?** A: It depends on physical strength and the mouthpiece. If the mouthpiece is very closed (1mm tip opening or less is typical of student setups) or if the student is very strong, these may be too weak. In my experience (20 years and hundreds of students), most students outgow them in a month if they practice and many have to switch to 2.5s much sooner if not start there (especially students that apply a lot of force to the mouthpiece). Better bet to buy a vandoren sample pack of 2s and 2.5s and you'll be covered for all eventualities. They sell sample packs of 4 reeds each.. **Q: Do they come in a reed guard?** A: Pictures in my listing shows the open box, with plastic guards. 8 new ones only. **Q: What is the return policy on these reeds? These Rico reeds have been lifesavers (and ear-savers) in her musical journey. Each reed lasts her about a month with daily playing, assuming she’s not using it as a toothpick, drumstick, or bookmark (it’s happened). Quality is consistent, they don’t splinter easily, and they make her sound less like a squeaky toy and more like a future Carnegie Hall soloist. If you have a beginning clarinet player in your life and want to avoid emergency “my reed broke before the concert!!!” meltdowns, just buy the 10-pack. Trust me.
