There are no self-cleaning aquariums. Filters reduce your maintenance. Without a filter, you would do a partial water change every 1-2 days with a gravel vacuuming. With filtration in place, you typically do a good vacuuming and 30% water change every 30 days for a tank this size, but that is dependent on the types of inhabitants, and the quantity of them. Replace filter media monthly, and take the filter system apart every couple of months. Once your tank has been up for a month or so, begin adding Tetra EasyBalance Plus weekly to help reduce the frequency of water changes, and maintain water quality in between them. **Q: How many fish could you put in the 20 gallon tetra tank? We'd like to keep guppies, a cory cat or 2 and maybe some shrimp?** A: Considering the species you wish to keep, we would recommend one male guppy to two or three females (keep in mind they breed like rabbits) or a group of 5 to 8 male guppies, and at least 3 or 4 corydoras catfish of the same variety. Total number of fish should be 10-12. As to shrimp, that will depend a little on what type but typically for this size tank, about 4 to 6 should be fine. Add these first so they can grow to a mature size and not be eaten by the fish. Provide plenty of plant coverage as well. **Q: Anyone else have a problem with the filter? Its not working properly, doesnt intake water and just gurgles. Also lid on it doesnt fit.** A: Make sure your tank is filled to the top with water. Also, since the lid is not fitting correctly, the intake tube may not be installed right. Make sure it is all the way down into the filter box. Last, but not least, fill the filter with water till it pours out of the spillway. **Q: what website can I get the cheapest tank from?** A: Petco and Petsmart often have tanks on sale. Petco has 50% off 'bare' glass tanks right now (July 2021). Kits usually come with a poor filter and an LED light hood with barely any LED's in it, so people usually end up replacing both within a few weeks, so check on the descriptions, pictures, and reviews. Tank is good, lid is good but the filter makes a lot of noise and replaced it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great product! *by M***T on February 25, 2017* Excellent deal considering what it comes with, I couldn't find any other kit that came with as much stuff! I did buy 1 more plant and a hiding place for my ghost shrimp. Some one said the plants look fake, but they are supposed to as they are part of the "Wonderland " series. That being said I'll admit they look good under they changing light colors. The filter is great and it provides plenty of water movement and it's pretty quiet(it was noisy for the first 30 seconds until it worked all the air out of the turbine), the only noise to come from it now is the water cascading off of it. The heater seems to work good, although I purchased this tank as an upgrade for my 2 goldfish so I don't use the heater in this tank. I use it in their old 3 gallon fish tank with a betta. It keeps the water at an even 77 degrees F. I would recommend as some add ons; gravel, some kind of starter bacteria to cycle the tank faster, some more plants /decorations, and more water conditioner/food after the samples are used up. The instructions for the hood do say to clip the lights into the hood, but these lights (at least for the color fusion) are a different type that come with their own instructions which is easy to install and one that I prefer so when I open the hood I'm not blinded by the led lights.
