Most people get the latest and greatest because they WANT it not because they need it. Keep in mind, that transfer speed between your modem and router are the true throughput limitation. If you have a device that streams 4K video, you will never be using more than around 25 MBPS. If you have Four 4K devices streaming simultaneously you can utilize a 100MBPS modem. You might actually be able to add a 5th streamer on that same network without discernable lag. If your are streaming 4K on a single device that's connected at 100MBPS..What does that get you? Nothing. If you are connected with a cell phone to your network and are surfing the internet on amazon.com or something the difference between page load times of 25MBPS vs 100MBPS . Would be something like 1 second vs 1/2 second . Why only a 50% gain? Because after 1/4 second the page is already downloaded and local processing is taking place to process and display the page. The only time you will really utilize a higher speed connection is when transferring files. Most people will not need more than 100MBPS unless they are downloading LOTS of large files, or they have many users splitting the modem bandwidth..or they have no patience whatsoever. You can start your game download and go make a sandwich. The most common case of multiple users splitting bandwidth on a 100 MBPS device connection is still usually overkill . For instance, we had 50MBPS internet. I was sharing it with my brother. We could each stream 4k video to our TV and surf the internet on our phones simultaneously without any discernable lag. Comcast gave us a free upgrade to 100MBPS. Amazingly, we both still stream video AND surf the net simultaneously with absolutely no change in our experience. Why ? Because we weren't utilizing the 50MBPS in the first place. So in reality a 100MBPS connection for a single device is usually waaay overkill for 90+% of the cases out there. If you NEED a 100+MBPS connection for your device, you will know it, because you will be one of the professionals in those industries that already knows all of this...and it will typically be a work related need, not a recreational need...except for those that are trying to download the entire internet. If you verify a 100MBPS modem connection and a 100MBPS device connection and your internet is still slow or you are having streaming problems the slowdown is 99% likely to be on the other end of the connection which is feeding you the data. In this case you can upgrade to a GBPS connection and you will still have the same prpblem. But your provider is not going to tell you that. They are going to tell you that you need more speed because that's how they make more money. And now you know. **Q: what are the two bands?** A: I believe the dual bands refer to the 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks being available simultaneously. 5ghz allows for fasters speeds, but has reduced range. **Q: Do you have to connect to the internet?** A: No, there are private networks that use the same data protocols: the TCP/IP family and various versions of IEEE 802.3, among other requirements. In reality, most people would use this for either their private LAN or for connecting to the WorldWideWeb or email servers via the internet. **Q: Can you schedule for the wifi to turn on and off automatically at certain times using the app?** A: It does not provide a way to turn the Wi Fi on and off on a schedule; however you can configure the access control rules to allow or block certain devices on a schedule. I decided that a separate modem and router combination was better than getting an all-in-one gateway based on my research. I have COMCAST/XFINITY service and in conjunction with the ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 Modem I paired with it I have stable WIFI in my apartment. Setup was easy using the web interface via WIFI. There is a basic menu and an advanced menu for getting things configured. It receives the internet signal from my modem automatically. All I had to do was to change the admin password (you must do this), name the 2 networks (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and set the security keys aka wifi passwords. I did upgrade the firmware using the built in firmware update checker/updater and now I'm current. It's optional but you can download a WIFI utilty app to your phone and check which channels have the least amount of traffic where you live and set your 2.4 and 5GHz frequencies to use those channels. That was easy to do using the web interface.Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies work with my computer and phone. I have a Brother laser printer also hooked up via WIFI and there's no problem printing from my laptop or phone. This router is probably best for a one or two bedroom apartment and if you have a house you'll probably want something a little more powerful/faster, but for myself it's perfect. I haven't had any problems connecting or maintaining a connection after a month straight of use. I only get 25Mbps download from my ISP which is about 3MBps (big "B" or Bytes) and I get max 3.5 MBps on certain downloads so the router can handle that no problem. So along with the ARRIS modem this Netgear WIFI router does its job quietly and I can enjoy wireless internet with no problems. There is a USB slot in the back for using a USB memory stick as a sort of network drive, but I haven't tried that yet. But nice to know I could if I wanted. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So Far, So Good... *by N***N on March 12, 2021* 3/12/2021: My new AC1600 was delivered last night, and I set it up this afternoon. What a breeze compared to my ancient single-band Netgear router (that I replaced due to age, slow speed, and connection problems).Per the QuickStart guide, I first downloaded the Nighthawk app, which efficiently walked me through set-up. From there it only took a few minutes to get all my devices connected to my new network.As a sidenote, I’m glad I wrote down the MAC addresses of all my devices before I switched to the new router. The new network is not picking up the name of my Living Room TV, so it’s listed as “Unknown” in connected devices. A quick check of the MAC address, and I was able to verify that it wasn’t just some random device connected by a hacker.As a long-time user of Netgear products, I have to say, the Nighthawk app has a **much** better interface than the old-school Netgear website. Gone are the days where you have to launch a browser on a connected device, type in the router’s IP address, then login and use the clunkier web interface. I really appreciate how streamlined and user-friendly the app is compared to that.One of the coolest features is the ability to test your connection speeds, both upload and download. (Yeah, that may be old hat to some of you out there, but not to me. Gotta love all the technological advances. I had to use an external device to do that with my old router. Wish I had replaced my ancient router sooner.)So far, so good… I will come back and post more updates to this review if I experience any issues. After downloading app Turn off 4glt, turn on WIFI on the phone. *by A***R on September 21, 2020* Once up and running it works really well and I would recommend this router. I use it for gaming (Ethernet connection) and watching stream content via WIFI ( Netflix etc.)The instructions are simple except for one key issue they don't mention. You download the Night Hawk app on to your phone to set up the unit. So I turn on my 4glt on my phone and download the app. All is well until you the app tries to connect to the internet via the WIFI. I kept getting "no internet connection" continuously. Thought something was wrong with my cable modem. Not the cable Modem. So after dis-connecting and reconnecting the WIFI router a few times, I decided to TURN OFF THE 4GLT ON MY PHONE, and just have the WIFI on in my phone.PRESTO! internet connection via WIFI to cable router.Big fail on the part of Net Gear for not mentioning that small detail.P.S. you are SOL after 3 month of registering your product for tech support. You get a one year warranty but nearly impossible to make a claim after the 3 months if you don't buy the extended support contract. They give you a phone number that I stayed on hold for 56 minutes until I got fed up and contacted Amazon. The Amazon rep sent me a return sticker to my account and shipped me a new unit in less than 5 days. Amazing!
