Thanks!** A: you just place it in the middle (i know it moves), and then when you put the dog's nail in there, it can only go so far and not passed that point....the first and only time i used it, i was still hesitant, so really i just cut a little bit of the nail off, not knowing if the 'stop' would be too far or not.....i think if it's your first time, you must determine how long the nail is, and if you put the dogs nail in there and you think the 'stop' is too close to the point where you're gonna hurt the dog, you pull back.....i think the 'stop' will work only if the nails are really long.....but i totally agree that there should be some instructions for us novices......hope this helps.........good luck! **Q: I have a 35 lb. dog. Should I get the "large" instead?** A: Small and medium are relative. I had wolfhounds. I then adopted a dog who was listed as a large hound. He was about 55 lbs. and could walk beneath the wolfhound's belly. I would have described him as a small hound. Anyway if those clippers are the same size I have (the pkg. has been thrown out) they are fine for my 50ish pound hounds. I do find the guard kind of annoying. It is to far away to prevent damage to the quip. I suppose it stops you from cutting way into the quip, but you can still easily harm your dog, especially with smaller breeds.
