I tried laying out tin foil or packing tape sticky side up and spray bottles but none of these made the cats NOT want to scratch when they had opportunity. I also several different sprays and this was the only one that worked for my cats (I have two and it was effective on both). It took generous and consistent applications at first to get them to stop associating the area rug with "floor-scratching post" but it definitely made it less appealing. Think of it as the bitter nail polish you apply to get kids to stop biting their nails. They're still going to want to and you have to be diligent at first, but over time my cats just forgot how much they used to love scratching the hell out of the rug and I would only need to reapply occasionally as a disincentive reminder. Say, liberally and every day at first, once a week after a week or so, and once a month after they really seem to have lost interest. You probably want to get one bottle to start but if it seems like it might do the trick for your cat(s), get a few more cuz you'll go through it fast. And it doesn't make the rug smelly or gross or anything to humans or dogs... just cats. And they don't avoid the rug either, they just don't seem to have any desire to scratch it. **Q: can this be used on cloth furnature?** A: Yes it can be used in furniture clothes blankets etc **Q: Does it make everything garlicky?** A: It looks like the current version doesn't have garlic oil and that is a relief, if true. Garlic is extremely toxic to cats if ingested. I don't know why anything would ever contain garlic if marketed for cats. The smell might be noxious to cats and make them avoid the area, but it also might get on their paws or other body areas. Perhaps at the low percentage of garlic oil, you wouldn't have to worry about toxicity, but: I would rather have peace of mind and NO garlic in anything for a cat. **Q: Do they make this for Canines too?** A: I'm sure they do. Maybe it's just the bottle I was sent, but mine smells exactly like lemon pledge! I have sprayed this around the main living areas of the house where we have the most issues & then watched our girl sniff the air, go right to the spots and start to hit them lime she's panicked. I have been using another product to clean up first & that has helped a lot, but I have much more cleaning that I can't get to until I get the problem under control. If anything, this product made the problems worse. If I spray one location, she might not come over and mess it up again, but there's no guarantee. If it worked or works for you, I am a little envious.
