It is easy to operate and runs absolutely silently. It does come with a permanent ceramic filter. However, if you have hard water locally and use it in the humidifier, the filter can eventually get clogged. Your options are: 1) Buy "de-mineralization" filters (from Amazon or the manufacturer - Air Innovations), or 2) Use distilled water. I use only distilled water, which eliminates that annoying "white mineral dust" throughout the room. My only complaint was the humidifier was NOT shipped in a standard Amazon box. Instead, it was shipped in the original mfg. box with my address label stuck on it. This was a bad procedure for two reasons. First, no security (possible package thieves) and second, damage in transit. My humidifier arrived in great condition, but the box had a hole and a few "dings" in it.
