The duvet came packaged well and shipped in a solid box. Obviously, upon unpacking, there is gonna be a minor odor and some creasing of the duvet. However, by following manufacturer instructions to air and layout for a few hours, both are reduced substantially. Of course, you could also wash and dry prior to use, to alleviate any lingering odor and wrinkles/creasing from packaging. I chose to simply air and layout the duvet, and was satisfied with the results suggested by the manufacturer.The softness of the duvet is more than acceptable out of the packaging, however, I'm sure washing and adding fabric softener would add additional softness, by removing any starch used by the manufacturer.The value for money I found to be fantastic. While this is my first duvet cover, the quality of the material and manufacturing is worthy of the price. It doesn't feel cheap, stitching is good, the packaging is good, and installing a comforter with the ties inside and buttoning the end is quite simple, even for this novice. I have not seen any major pilling or snags from my 7-1/2 month old kitten sleeping and playing on it, but his claws do leave some dimpled areas and very tiny punctures in the fabric that are slightly noticeable up close (see second picture). Nothing worthy of a negative review for me, because I'm not aware of any fabrics that can withstand the claws of a kitten/cat without sustaining some damage. I'm sure if you trimmed or capped their claws, this would eliminate any risk of damage to the fabric. I don't have a dog, so I can't comment on the durability of the fabric with a dog.Comfort out of the bag is superb. Those with sensitive skin or noses might feel better after washing the duvet prior to first use. As I stated above, I did not launder the duvet prior to use, instead I chose to air it out by laying it across my bed. This reduced the creases and slight new smell to an acceptable level for me to sleep under it the same night. The material is soft and has no offense feel to it. It is light weight (think high thread count sheets thickness of material) and doesn't add any additional weight to a comforter.So, I am satisfied with my purchase, and will purchase from this manufacturer again, in the future. The quality of the duvet is good and feels like it will survive frequent uses for many years to come. It is soft and comfortable enough to use right out of the packaging for the average user, with a bit of breathing to reduce any noticeable packaging odor and creasing. Durability to pets sleeping on the comforter appear pretty standard and acceptable. Pilling, snags and punctures appear minimal, and are not out of the ordinary when sleeping with a cat/kitten. And installing a comforter inside the cover is not complicated, but requires some patience and planning to accomplish, but nothing impossible for even a novice to manage alone.So, if you're considering a duvet cover for your comforter, I would highly reccomend this seller and manufacturer. It is, by no means, one of those high-end duvet covers with an equal price tag. But it is a substantial quality and quite lovely duvet, making it a very good value for the money.
