    Excellent sound but poor implementation

*by K***Y on Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2016*

Sound-wise I would give the Rock Jaw Alfa Genus V2 a full 5-star. However, a few implementation issues bother me enough to sent me looking for another alternative.Pros :1) Sounds very good for a earphone in this price range. Beats everything I had before, from equivalently priced Sennheiser, to higher end Etymotic etc. My music (vocal jazz, pop, light rock, etc) sounds very lively especially with the treble filter.2) The swappable sound filters let you customize your sound.3) Very solid, indestructible aluminium body construction.Cons :1) The cable is so rubbery/chunky that it is literally impossible for it to drop nicely down from your ears to your phone/MP3 player in your pocket. It has to make turns and coil up in mid-air, hanging out and away from your body.2) The cable (again) is so heavy that it constantly tugs on the ear-tip if you are standing or walking. Using the cable clip will solve this problem but only works if I am wearing a jacket in colder weather. Using the cable clip with just a t-shirt is awkward.3) The swappable sound filter has a thread on the outside like a screw and it screws into the body of the earphone. The rubber ear-tip has a hole in the middle which goes around the sound filter snugly. The problem is without any sign, the subtle twisting action to seat the ear-tip into your ear will eventually unscrew the sound filter off from the earphone and the sound filter + ear-tip assembly will either get stuck inside your ear canal, or it will be lost. That happened to me twice, the first time with the ear-tip stuck in my ears (luckily the ear-tip didn't go all the way into my ear canal and I managed to pull it out) and the second time it fell off while I am not wearing it and now I've lost one sound filter and 1 small size ear tip.4) Now I am left with using another filter and moved up to a bigger size ear tip which doesn't fit well. I emailed Rock Jaw (the seller) for replacement (at my cost) and they never get back to me.I say if you are looking for a pair of earphone mostly for listening while sitting down in the comfort of your home or office, this might works for you But if you are using these earphone in your commute or you have to walk or run a lot, I will seriously consider the issues I have listed above before purchasing.

toss those standard ear buds. get rid of those iphone buds!

*by M***P on Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2015*

*note i have to preface that this review takes on a harsh tone for two reasons...1 the cord is horribly designed!2. everything i wrote is going to be compared directly to their hybrid, the Kommand, which is a far superior IEM..... soooo keep that in mind, k? this is a really nice offering, and if the cord was changed then you'd have a solid 4.The sound quality, while ok, does not outweigh the cord, which is heavy (this is where you get minus a HUGE star!) and does not isolate from the friction w/ clothing. it is very noisy. they supply a clip, but it seems ridiculous to have to use it, and the clip itself is of cheap quality and doesnt attach to things like zippers, shinny fabrics like a jacket, leaving it as a pretty useless attachment. the cord doesnt bend, so it is fairly intrusive. Look, if you can manage to tether it to a surface then go for it. with the clip there is only a bit of distortion. However, in the north we are always clothed extra warm, and those layers come off pretty often. the tendency to rip them from your ear is a chance i dont want to take! the ear caps don't supply any real noise isolation. you will most likely have to go with some comply substitutes. Even with a comply you will get some outside noise, but this is to be expected, because after all these arent noise canceling buds!I liked the kommands, but the over ear wire was too uncomfortable, but the Alfa isnt nearly as pretty in terms of sound soundstage, or does it give much girth to the music. It has very "hey you are listening to music in your living room" sorta feel. it is pretty flat, and the black filter just muddles the bass without providing anything of substance. this is the opposite with the kommand where the black filter provided a deeply intimate music experience. THAT SAID, the filters do boost the overall music, as the gold is sorta 'empty' and lifeless. I prefer the black, because while it is difficult to pick up any change, it does boost the highs and those little details (Test on anything Birdy sings). W/ bass you will find, say with Nostalghia - Homeostasis, a wider more engrossing bass. So, what i am trying to say here is that the treble and bass hike are really specific to different music. So, if you like bass music then go with silver, if you like folk/indie stuff go w/ black. If you go w. the black and pick up something like Rage Against The Machine, you wont get that raw experience. If you take on Elliot Smith w/ the silver you are going to miss that magic. So pick according to what you like to listen to, not that "well i think i may like bass more".The treble in general is a bit grainy, and smooth, crisp highs are jeopardized. It has adequate bass, but nothing noteworthy. The bass filter does give it some heft, though. W/ the filter the bass seems a bit muted, in the really deep corners of bass, and somewhat truncated. I do wish it was sturdy on its own (the gold, for example is so flat), which would support the 'natural' filter more. i would have rather kept my kommands and taken off the ear wire than get these, as the sound quality is pretty matched with any other company's similar product. a fairly sad offering compared to the kommand. In retrospect i wish i stayed w/ the Kommand and i implore you to check it out first before taking a look at this one.at this price point it is a decent IEM, however there are nicer plugs out there, specifically the Kommands. Actually when i say nicer i am only referring to their Kommands, because at this price point you WONT find better products. They are, no where near your typical grab and buy item, so i do recommend them before going to your local radioshack (if it still exists around you)... Before you go doing something stupid like grabbing an entry level Sony, or.... skull... candy (can barely utter the name), i beg you to check out this company and, if the Kommands arent in your price range pick this up. you wont be disappointed. casual users wont be disappointed!this company cares about the quality.... and it shows... these things are amazingly well constructed, light, and really feel like a high, very high quality IEM. the customer service is a rock star. it is a small company, and deserves the attention! plus, they are british; all american adore the brits!

    Wow! Sound quality is amazing!

*by F***X on Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019*

Bought these based on a Wired magazine review, and so glad I did! My Beats headphones finally gave out after 7 years of service, thought it would be easy to get a pair for well under $100 that would have good sound quality compared to that older tech. Tried a pair of well reviewed Sony ones from BB, they were horrible! Put the Rock Jaws in exactly as they arrived, and was blown away! Far superior to my old Beats. I saw some reviews about the build on these, they look and feel well made. As the people who did have issues seemed to get them resolved by the company, I went ahead. So far, my impression is that these are hidden gems from a company that isn't that well known yet.
