The truck pulls up to the station, you turn the crane in that direction, lower crane and magnet grabs cargo. You wind up to lift cargo, you turn in direction of track and lower cargo on the train car. You must remove cargo from magnet manually, as I recall. I do not believe there is a magnet release of any kind. The whole process can be done in reverse. Sorry if this does not help. I can tell you my grandsons have played with this cargo station a great deal and really seemed to enjoy it. They also love the train station turn around platform with the train car garage. The crane action works very well, automatically dumps the box into the loading tray. When the truck (or other flat car) is backed into position the loading tray can be tilted and the box perfectly slides onto the small posts. Great fun. I love the truck.
