Great book for Autism Awareness Month!

*by M***D on Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2015*

I teach many high school students who have autism. This year we did an autism unit that was extremely well-received by my students. I used Reflector to display the book on the Promethean board as I read it. There were many pictures that we could look at more closely and discuss. They loved the slaughterhouse aspect! We also watched the movie starring Clare Danes. I will use this book again. My students had not heard of Temple Grandin before and now she is their hero. As teachers and parents, we educate ourselves about autism, but we should remember to share this information with our students who actually have autism. This book is appropriate for any middle or high school student although some of the slaughterhouse images might be disturbing to adults - students loved it and could quote some of the descriptions word for word but I had a hard time reading some of it.

Temple Grandin: How the Girl who Loved Cows . . .

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2012*

This is a short but extremely interesting book on Temple Grandin, the poster woman for successfully handling Asperger's Syndrome,a form of higher functioning autism. In a few, succinct chapters,it describes the world as Temple sees it - she thinks in pictures, not in words - and how she overcame the obstacles of functioning differently in a world in which social and business relationships are based on words. Temple has risen from a nonverbal child whose father insisted that she belonged in an institution to the world's foremost authority on humane slaughter of animals. Temple is also a college professor who lectures in the classroom and on the road and has written many authoritative articles on her specialty. A chapter toward the end of the book is addressed specifically to persons with Asperger's and suggests a number of ways they can adapt successfully in this society of words. I found this book to be very insightful and it helped me to understand better the thought processes of my own adult child with autism.

Temple Grandin answers the question: Do these crazy autistic people have a future?

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2013*

This book is a primer for all the people out there that think that autistic people ought to be locked up and the key thrown away. Grandin, an autistic person, and considered one of the top ten people in the world that is moving the arc of history, shows how she found a future through her autism and can open the door for all the troubled spirits out there that think there is no future. She normalizes the autistic experience and provides guidelines for a successful life. She points out that the geeks and nerds in Silicon Valley are often on the autistic spectrum. She is passionate that that people like herself can get help for themselves and their parents can get help and they can have successful futures. It is a huge gift to our society at this desperate time. The story of her life in this book is fascinating and inspiring.
