I drilled 5 small holes in mine to allow water drain. If it is exposed to rain mine would no doubt stain concrete. The bowl is untreated cast iron and even without drain holes it could drip rusty rain water on whatever surface it sits on. **Q: can it be converted to use gas logs** A: It's just a big iron bowl, I'm sure you could. Drilling a hole large enough for a gas line through cast iron would require specialized tools like a carbide tipped hole saw. If you're leaving it outside you'll want to drill a hole in the bottom anyway to let water drain out. **Q: Can this be used on a plastic deck?** A: I've used it on my lawn but only after placing a plywood disc covered with aluminum foil. I would be nervous about using on a plastic deck. I would not do it without some sort of protection. **Q: Do the handles get hot?** A: That's what they make hot pads for. The bowl is thinner than expected, at only 0.075" (a little more than 1/16"), the welds on the legs are unimpressive, and one of the nuts had no internal threads. It's made in China, at this price point it's about what I expected. I specifically bought this because I wanted something portable and I didn't want to damage my lawn. The first time I used it I only had one 3/4" thick piece of plywood under it and it still burned my grass.
