If you work out inside and most people who buy dumbbells do, then get a floor mat. one of those foam rubber puzzle mats, there not expensive. **Q: Does everyone that buys these dumbells have the same problem with the rubber stinking up there house? It's so bad I have to leave them outside!** A: I bought a pair used/like new. So it was someone elses return and they probably got the initial bad smell. Mine smelled at first but I have wiped the rubber ends down twice with 50/50 mix water and white vinegar. The odor is very little now. I can tell its going to go away. It's been 3 days since they were delivered. **Q: How long can this product be used?** A: I guess it depends on how well you treat your equipment. The dumbbells are solid and the rubber encasing seems to be very durable.
