Beautiful UI! *by D***H on Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2016* The sound on this player tops that of the Sony NW ZX2 in terms of it's rich detail. However I have had my ZX2 for less than the 100 hrs burn in time, so perhaps the Sony will get better. But it is hard to imagine that the Sony will be able to top this player.The Screen and the UI of the Calyx are outstanding. Whereas the Sony's UI feels very much like an android phone would (rows of apps), the Calyx has a beautifully crafted UI that is dedicated simply to playing music. The OS in the Calyx does crash occasionally, something I have not experienced on the Sony. The Calyx is lighter than the Sony, and does not come with a leather carrying case (Sony does). The Calyx uses as standard micro USB cable, whereas the Sony uses a proprietary cable. In terms of downloading, I have a macbook pro and thus need to use an android loading program to transfer music.The Calyx's sound, UI and construction are far superior to my Sony. However, the Sony has bluetooth, wifi and NFC, while the Calyx has nothing! So I am unable to use the Calyx player in my car, because the USB connection does not allow you to play music through it, only through the headphone jack. This makes the Calyx, a limited-use player for me as my car doesn't have a phone-in jack.The problem I have now is that, having listened to the Calyx and the Sony, I want the Calyx's sound in my car, but will have to "settle" for the Sony, which is very good. I got my Sony first, and thought it was amazing, shouldn't have bought the Calyx. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best sounding portable Digital Audio Player *by C***O on Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2015* CalyxM is one of the best sounding portable Digital Audio Player available in the market today. For acoustic music (Jazz, classical, blues, folk, vocals etc.) Calyx M sounded better than even the $2400 AK 240. Perhaps the reason for its amazing sound is that the DAC and headphone amp runs Class A. But that also means only about 4 hour battery life - that can be easily extended with an Anker Battery pack. The user interface is rather slow but very thoughtfully done. Updating the firmware to 1.01 is a must. If only the user interface was like A and K - then we have the best of both worlds! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Calyx M vs Pono *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2015* Sounds like tape, and not cassette tapes I mean big fat studio tape, or what I imagine reel-to-reel tape sounds like. Load this up with 24/96 or even better 24/192 (which is unfortunately super hard to find for contemporary music) and enjoy sound that to my ear is every bit as good as my vinyl rig. And my vinyl rig is no slouch: Rega RP6, Manley Chinook preamp.I got the Pono which is what initially got me into hi-res. Calyx vs Pono and the Calyx wins in pretty much every category, I guess not surprising since it's 2 or 3x the price. I eBayed the Pono (sorry Neil). Its character is smooth in an "FM radio in dad's garage" kind of way. Bassier than the Pono which is why you find yourself bopping your head more. But the fidelity is all there and nothing is blurred or mushy. Also the ability of this thing to separate main and backing vocals is like nothing I've ever heard. And even so, it's not analytical at all. The sound overall is addictive. I can't put it down and always want one more song before leaving the house.When used with headphones I use Bowers and Wilkins P5 (first generation) which they do great with. Haven't used others for comparison.The only thing the Pono does better is more air in the vocals. And perhaps it may seem more impressive in a "hi-fi geek" way over a brief listening session. It may have more inner detail than the Calyx but really who cares, it's the feel that matters.Cons: The magnetic volume slider is hard to use unless you have a firm grip on the device, and the next/prev/play/pause buttons are hard to distinguish by feel.
