My wife and I just finished the Time Travel edition, and we had a pretty good time doing it. Here is a game-by-game evaluation. House Arrest (Introductory Game) Hmmm... this Time Travel set is supposed to be a "family" edition, yet the story line behind House Arrest is that a kid, who was grounded for misbehaving, is sneaking out of the house behind his parents' back to attend a party. Yeah, that's real family oriented. Someone didn't think this through very well. [Well, more than just some'one': designers, editors, test players, etc.] It sets a bad tone for the game set right off the bat. As for the game itself, I did not think this was anywhere close to being as good an introductory game as The Basement, which is available in some of the standard base sets. In fact, I'd even say it was less coherent than The Basement, even though the target audience is ages 10+ versus 16+. This introductory game does more to turn people away than excite them for the next adventure. 2 stars. The Present (Level 2) This was a decent game. None of the puzzles were "out there", though a couple components of them might be on shaky ground. The worst thing I can say about this game is that we discovered the Chrono-Decoder is not infallible. We entered an incorrect code in Part 2 (discovered after-the-fact), and it gave us credit for it. Oh well, at least we progressed to the next section. :-) In general, this was an entertaining and for the most part logical game, but at the same time it was kind of an uninspiring game also. 3 stars. The Past (Level 3) We were all set to play the next installment in the set (The Past), but when we opened the envelope and cross checked the listed contents to the actual contents, we discovered we were missing Part 3 of the game. Time to come up with a Plan B for the night (we ended up playing The Magician expansion pack instead). A quick email exchange with Kroeger Toys, and the missing envelope was on its way. So right off the bat, I have to give a shout out to Kroeger customer service, and Anna in particular. I also have to give kudos to Escape Room The Game in general; i.e. I've always appreciated that they list the contents of each envelope, and this latest hiccup reinforces that appreciation. Heck, sometimes it's just good to know how they refer to a certain item (like for instance, maybe calling something a "torch" (British) versus a "flashlight" (American)). Okay, with all the materials now in hand, we sat down anew to play The Past. It was worth the wait! Especially since Part 3 was (arguably) the best part of the game. For a Level 3 game, The Past was on the easier side. That doesn't mean it wasn't challenging, but I think maybe the rating was skewed toward the "Family" Edition concept, where younger participants are expected to make contributions. Regardless, my wife and I had fun with The Past. 4 stars. The Future (Level 3.5): Two things prevented The Future from being a fantastic game. First, the group was split into two again. Escape Room The Game does this way too often. The second detriment, and the bigger of the two, was that one of the puzzles couldn't be solved. It was an optical puzzle, and either our playing material was defective, or my wife's and my eyes are incapable of perceiving what we were supposed to see. This is the second time we've run into an unsolvable optical puzzle when playing Escape Room The Game titles. If you take away those two issues, though, this was a really fun game, and the best of the three in spite of the drawbacks. Again, I think the difficulty level was a bit overrated, but it was still challenging regardless. 4 stars. When we finished playing The Future, my wife asked, "Was this [set of games] newer or older compared to the rest?" I replied, "It's one of their most recent releases." She said, "You can tell.
