Allows for easy repositioning of SMD’s but also is sticky enough to hold things together until reflow. This strikes a nice balance and is recommended. But one point that should be stated clearly: yes you CAN get away with not cleaning the PCB assembly after reflow, but WHY WOULD YOU? A few minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner works magic, and reveals the bright, shiny solder fillets this is capable of producing.
