It's just that some of the older homes use 3/8" tapered thread fitting on the valve, and the hose connection is 1/2", which is more common nowadays. the solution isn't to get an adapter to change it to 1/2", because you should be minimizing the number of connections thus the chance of leaking. You should be changing out your gas valve if it isn't 1/2". Therefore, the hose comes with everything you need to connect an appliance and it's working extremely well. All of that came at a much more reasonable price than what Home Depot is asking for a 4' gas hose. P.S. make sure you connect your tapered fitting to another tapered fitting, not regular non-tapered NPT fitting. and do not use any sealant or tape on your tapered fitting. just crank the connections tight. they should seal through metal on metal compression.
