There is a lock nut on each side of the hub. For road bike with a quick release that OLD is normally 130mm. A road bike with a rear disc brake or a mountain bike with a quick release it's normally 135mm. These will work with 130mm, but not 135mm. Having bought these, I later bought a pair of Hexlox axles. While they are more than twice the price ($28), the Hexlox skewers are a little lighter, but feel a lot more sturdy and secure. These skewers never felt like they kept the rear wheel secure. **Q: Are the nuts made from steel or aluminum?** A: Aluminum **Q: how do you measure the length? Under specifications you say 148.5mm........ where is this measured from** A: Front axle ~140mm from end to end.
