Unlike most people that have written reviews on this, I bought it to be my bed, not for a guest room or bunk-bed, etc.. I was looking for something that didn't take up much room (currently renting one room in a house) and could be rolled up or stood up during the day to provide more space. I needed it firm but not stiff (60+ male, 200 lbs with a few chronic med issues), since it would be laying on a piece of carpet on a wood floor (no frame). It has more than met my expectations so far. I can't wait to go back to bed later :-). It came vacuum-sealed and rolled up, encased in a thicker (4-5 mil?), "tube" of plastic inside a good-quality, thick cardboard box. Carefully cut the thicker plastic (too tight to slip off) tube off (use scissors if you want to be sure not to slip and cut into the mattress) with a box cutter and cut off the plastic "bag". No big release of chemical vapors like others I've dealt with in the past. I was very surprised how low (almost non-existent) the odor was. Had to get really close to the mattress to notice it.
