I think it will work very well for this purpose, or as a small gym bag. However the bag literally stinks! It has a terrible petroleum odor. I thought my husband spilled gasoline in the house! I have let is sit outside and sprayed the inside with Febreeze and the odor is dissipating somewhat. I hope it goes away more otherwise I am not sure he will be able to use it. This bag is advertised as a diaper bag, and as a former diaper bag aficionado I can't say I would recommend this as a diaper bag since there is only one large compartment with a small zippered pouch, and then a second smaller zippered compartment. When I was using diaper bags I needed a lot more pockets inside the bag than this one has to hold various items.
