All the usual characters were there, along with a splattering of magic and adventure. The story centres on Alice Todhunter Moon and her discovery that she also has magical ability. Her mother died when she was young and her father is the leader of the Pathfinders who live in a fishing village and preserve the ancient secrets which have been handed down to those who have come of age. Alice's father goes missing on a fishing trip and Alice is left in the care of an eccentric aunt, who doesn't appear to like Alice much, and the feeling is mutual. The aunt is connected to a dark sourcerer who wants to dig up and take an egg that bestows extraordinary magical ability to whosoever possesses it. Alice eventually goes to the castle where she meets Septimus (the ExtraOrdinary Wizard) and with his help and everyone elses, they set off on an adventure to save the egg, help kidnapped villages return to their village, and basically turn the world to rights.
