Taxi: (Arabic edition) Paperback – September 5, 2011

This book was well-written and extremely interesting. I know about current events in Egypt from the Arab Spring on, but this book takes place before all of that. I enjoyed reading about the state of things (the politics, the way of life, how the every day person felt) just prior to the revolution. It's a quick read and never dull. Translation is perfectly done.

Tired of reading about the Middle East through big, traumatic news stories? "Taxi" is a great portrait of contemporary Egyptian culture--on political and personal levels. It's simply narratives by taxi drivers (the ones lazy journalists usually take their man-on-the-street quotes from anyway!), and it explains a lot about the various frustrations of living in Cairo today.And if you've ever ridden in a Cairo taxi, you know the experience can be incredibly aggravating. Amazingly, this book makes the drivers sympathetic, though hardly saintly.My only small frustration with this book is that the translation is occasionally a tiny bit stilted, but in general it's a million times better than most books translated from Arabic.

A facinating book. Well worth the read for anybody headed for Egypt or interested in Egypt and the Arab world. .It has a lot to say about the challenges we as a nation face in that part of the world. A wonderful account of what people really think, at least taxi drivers.

This was not the Arabic edition! This book is in English. I bought it to practice my Arabic reading. I still want to read it anyways but its a bummer

If anyone wonders why Egypt toppled Mubarak, read this book. Cairo in all its beauty and ugliness is the backdrop to the Egyptian people, funny, sad, angry, hungry, oppressed, depressed, depraved and enraged at the conditions of living under the Mubarak regime.

I found the book entertaining and quite funny.. An interesting take on the pulse of the 'common man' in Cairo and very descriptive of the pre-spring political mood.

Excellent book,really enjoyed.some how I like to read a chapter book,short chapters are even better .The good thing about this book is each chapter has different and very interesting story.

An excellent description of the egyptian society before the Arab Spring!

I found this book very interesting, because it shows the story from an unusual angle. It really made me curious to know more about Egypt, but also showed how Egypt is. It get under the skin of the revolution and the country's state. You get the opinions of the people, (here of course fictional) - so it really gave me a great impression of how Egypt is.

fun - made easier to appreciate having spent time in ME & Cairo - but an amusing series of vignettes

Wonderfully written. Light read. Portrays some parts of the Egyptian Life in it. At times makes you think it is a facts book.

« Taxi » rassemble des discussions avec des chauffeurs de taxi, collectées le temps d'une course, réelle ou imaginaire. Acteurs et spectateurs privilégiés de la société, ces hommes sont idéalement placés pour révéler l'air du temps et l'âme d'une ville. J'imaginerais bien d'ailleurs un équivalent pour Paris. Il s'agit ici du Caire et « Taxi » nous plonge donc au coeur de l'Egypte. Les chauffeurs représentent eux-mêmes des classes sociales, des niveaux d'éducation et des religions assez variés. Ils parlent aussi bien de leur quotidien que de la politique intérieure et internationale. Il est aussi bien question d'enfants, de cinéma que de corruption. Bien sûr ce livre écrit avant la chute de Moubarak prend une connotation particulière après la révolution arabe.Ces échanges brefs ne permettent pas de s'attarder sur les personnages mais tous ces moments saisis finissent par composer une image réaliste de la société cairote. Sur la cinquantaine d'instantanés, il y en bien sûr que j'ai préférés. Je pense en particulier à la nouvelle où le chauffeur demande ce que les Américains diraient si on leur imposait ce qu'ils imposent aux autres pays (je l'ai tant entendu) ou à la nouvelle où un chauffeur explique son parcours du combattant pour obtenir le droit d'exercer son métier (cela me rappelle la France, avec juste des bakchichs en moins). Il y a aussi des nouvelles qui m'ont laissée un peu indifférente. En fait, ce livre est si proche du documentaire (j'aimerais d'ailleurs pouvoir démêler le vrai du faux) qu'il était parfois trop égyptien pour moi, au sens où il m'a manqué les codes pour apprécier les nombreuses références culturelles (cinéma, blagues...). Pour l'originalité de sa démarche, ses qualités littéraires et la justesse des situations, c'est néanmoins une lecture que je recommande.
