Delivery was one day early, product arrived undamaged. I expected little to no foliage, given the deciduous nature of the tree. Repotted in the following days with ericaceous compost (japanese maples do best in acidic soil). Kept it outside during the winter and it did just fine. In April, when the buds started to open, I fertilized it with Vitax Acer Feed (organic) - best time to fertilize is at the start of the growing season. The young leaves are very tender and the tree needs to be in a sheltered position. If it gets cold (<5 CΒ°), bring the tree inside, as the leaves might get damaged otherwise. The deep red colour of the foliage is only achieved if the tree is in a sunny position (leaves remain green otherwise). Water by a small amount everytime the top soil layer gets dry (this will prevent leaves with dried tips).
