It's very good and has lasted perfectly these few years and sure no signs of wearing out. This purchase is for our second St Bernard as the current one is still going strong (I have opened it and cleaned the bearing a bit) The only issue is now the lead has a tendency to flip and introduce a fold in the lead meaning that it no longer reels in properly and you have to reel it out and manually flip the lead tape back over. The newer lead didn't suffer quite so much from this so much. The tape is quite easily strong enough to hold him, as are the ratchets of the bobin and the lock mechanism. You just need to make sure the collar or harness is equally tough 🙂 Handle is comfortable to hold although not quite big enough to put my hands through with big gloves. Design is a classic Flexi style with a 'stop' button and lock initiated and released all with the thumb. The only thing I would wish to see is a tough d ring to attach a carabineer to allow the lead to be looped around trees or benches when stopped and lead is locked. I had the tape one time and yes it was sturdy but did not roll back into the handle properly and would get twisted easily. The cord has always worked for me and has never broke (except for the one time the dog bit it into). **Q: Is there a 'pause' function: leash locks on a button press and releases once I stop pressing the button?** A: If you push down on the large button, it stays locked as long as you hold the button down. If you push down and slide the small button on top forward it will lock in the position. **Q: Foe me, one of the most imprortant issues is the hand opening domensions.. Whatt are the opening dimensions? I'm not concerned about the package size.** A: It is approximately 4 in by 1 and 1/2 in. I have somewhat of a large hand and my hand fits very comfortably inside the grip. **Q: Is the handle on the small the same size as on medium leash?** A: Hello, I’m 6 ft tall with big hands. This handle fits very comfortably as I use it. I must say, this is a wonderful, well made leash. Absolutely love it. Not sure of the size of the medium one.
