However, after a couple of days all our local birds seemed to get re-programmed to avoid the spikes, and hence our deck railings, completely. We were so happy with them that we ordered a second set in order to cover the entire area near our bird feeders which has resulted in a LOT less bird poop on the deck and virtually none on the railings. Because of the width of our railings I had to place two abreast. Black zip ties worked well to attach them without having to drill permanent holes in the railing.
