This is not a light weight coat. My son is 12 , barely above average height and slender. The mens small was a perfect fit. I would also trust this coats protection in subzero temps. It is also kinda closer to a 3/4 length coat, not long but does come past the waist. I am planning on getting a matching coat for myself.
