I generously went with a 4 :)I ordered two cables. As long as they don't stop working, I'll be satisfied enough but the build quality makes me a little leery. Both sides fit looser into ports than any other cable I've used. When you connect them, you don't get much resistance on the way in or a really strong "click" to let you know they're seated properly. On the mini side, I even kept applying more pressure than I ever would with a cable like this, because it didn't seem like it was as far in as it should be. The fittings that cover the ends of the cable (the part you hold when pulling or pushing the cable in/out) are also loose, which is again something I've never seen, but that won't affect sound or connection issues. It's just one more thing that reflects poorly on the build quality.The cable does serve the purpose. The sound quality is as good as any other optical cable I've used and they were affordable, so that's all good. With the build quality though, I wouldn't be shocked if they stopped working tomorrow or I start getting connection issues (static, intermittent drops, etc). Hopefully, I'll be posting an update in some months ahead saying "they've held up great," but for now, I wouldn't recommend these to anyone who frequently reconnects or moves the cable around. With this configuration, I would only be able to play in 2 channel stereo. I wondered if it was possible to output digital 7.1/5.1 Dolby/DTS sound from my XBMC movies to my home theater system. This cable was just the solution!The headphone jack on my Mac doubles as an optical audio port. So I just plugged the cable in, and my iTunes music and XBMC movies sounded so much clearer. I no longer hear my speakers "pop" when I turn my ceiling fan on and off. The receiver automatically displays "Dolby Pro Logic...", etc, when the source changes formats from movie to movie, so I know that I am now getting a clean, digital audio signal for my receiver to decode and send out to my 5.1 theater speakers.I chose the Cables to Go version because it has a heavy, flexible jacket that will resist bending and the possibility of breaking the fibre optic cable inside. I and very happy with the quality of this cable. Excellent value for the price of this cable.
