Review: Excellent transfer iron! - Transfer irons are somewhat hard to find, so I was pleased to find an affordable one here on desertcart. I have a woodworking project where I transfer a cut pattern for a carving, but also have a toner transfer for a sign that goes with it. It does well with both transfers! To make it work, you first need to print your pattern, words, or whatever in reverse, with heavy toner. Then you: * Position the paper carefully. * Tape the paper down on one side so it flips open like a magazine. * Iron a small section a few inches across. * Peel the paper back and verify you got a complete transfer. * Replace the page exactly where it was (My usual downfall) and - If the transfer was incomplete, hit the same section again. - If the transfer was complete, hit a section next to it with overlap. *Repeat until your transfer is complete. When I do my part, starting with very smooth wood, it gives a complete coverage without gaps or double images. Any mistakes are purely my own as the iron is doing its job perfectly. It's pretty hard to burn the paper, though it will darken as you iron it, which makes it easy to track your progress. If so how successful are you at printing out the pattern on a desk jet.** A: Yes, the tool is used to transfer patterns to wood. We receive no complaints so I'd say success rateis high. Can it be used for other functions, such as soldering, wood-burning or adding designs to leather.** A: The answer for ordinary mortals is NO, but for the gods on high Olympus, it is yes. The little round foot is threaded for a #8-32 machine screw. The hole on mine is drilled and tapped to about 1/2 inch. So, you can get a screw at any hardware store that will screw into that hole. It will heat up the same as the round foot that comes with the unit. Now for more $$$ than the unit cost, you can go to a machine shop and have some special shape foot made for your special needs. Soldering depends on the melting point of the solder. Off hand is would not want to solder with the tool as the thin copper coating will probably dissolve in molten solder. I doubt if it gets hot enough for wood-burning. I would think you could transfer designs to leathery transferring a black and white design from a laser copier onto Clearprint No. 1000HP Design Vellum paper. Laser printers may be fussy about the vellum as the toner powders really do not like to stick to it. When you place the vellum design toner powder down onto the leather and rub it firmly with the hot transfer tool, the toner powder will melt. Then it is a contest would the toner prefer to stick to the leather or to the vellum. I will bet that the leather will win and the design will transfer to the leather. Now you have a very intricate design on the leather. If this is on something like a belt, I would think the design would be abraded off. You probably need to provide some abrasion protection for the design., You just have to experiment to see how it works for you in your application. I do very intricate designs on wood this way, but then coat them with Varathane clear gloss polyurethane water based paint. **Q: I live outside the US, and our AC is 220. is it dual power or does it work on 220 AC?** A: No. It only works on 110/120v. These were done by making laser prints of some of my original art and using the tools mentioned above to transfer to wood. If using wood it helps to have a very smooth, well sanded surface.
