Both "wheels" spin in opposite directions, and can get to spinning pretty fast in a stiff breeze. Some things you need to know-- it's pretty small, but if you know that, it's a lovely accent in the right spot in your garden. It's also not very sturdy, so you can't manhandle it when putting it together and pushing it into the ground (easier in damp soft soil). You may have to bend the "spoons" to accept the wind better, especially if only one wheel spins (carefully-- it would be easy to twist them off if you overdo it). And finally, make sure you have all the parts, and that everything is intact. Mine was missing the ball at the end of one of the wheels--I could have lived without it, but it's not just decorative--it acts as a weight and without it the wheel won't spin. The company was great about replacing it, though. The glass sphere in the center is not a light, it has phosphorescent material inside that gives off a very soft glow at night--so don't expect it to shine. In spite of the drawbacks, I just love it! LOVE this addition. Didn't have to tweek anything for it to spin. Sometimes that is required. It is also important to figure out the right angle for some spinners to catch wind in the right curves of a spinner for it to spin. Live in Rio Rancho NM - 30 minutes from Albuquerque, in a super windy area. Placed spinner not too far from a wall and it is catching great wind and spinning as I write this! SUPER COOL! One of my spinners is shaped like a tulip. I had to slightly bend the upright tulip stems VERY CAREFULLY to catch the wind right but not this spinner which is fortunate because the metal discs on the stems seem a little fragile. Could break off if twisted. The only reason I'm not rating it 5 star is because the glass ball detached during shipping. Nothing Gorilla Glue couldn't take care of. I've even attached fat metal birds to river rock with the stuff. Will see tonight if the glass ball glows but I don't watch it at night anyway. However, some of the "ears" were slightly bent when it arrived so I tried to straighten them out. I broke two of them off in the process and now it doesn't spin as well. I have a friend who can spot weld them back on, but I was disappointed that it was so flimsy. I'd buy another, but if the ears on the next one were bent I'd be very gentle in reshaping them. As far as holding up in the wind; yes, it does alright but will need a little concrete in the post hole. Just using a rubber maillot to drive the fork into the ground isn't sufficient to keeping it in place.
