They emerged different days. 1 emergrd 2 days after. There were 3 but only 1 was translucent and light tan in color. The other 2 where smaller and nearly black. I made tge mistake of thinking the lid was supposed to be removed, once all the catipellers "attached" themselves to the lid. I believe I was supposed to wait until they all formed their chrysalis. When I removed the lid and put it in the holder, a few caterpillars decided to crawl to top of habitat. I don't think this affected their survival as the 1 each that did emerge where on lid and on roof of habitat. It just made visually watching them more difficult. Is it actually a monarch kit? I don’t want another variety of butterflies.** A: The butterflies that I received were painted ladys. They are similar to the monarch but smaller. **Q: What is the best time of year for this project so that the butterflies don’t die after they’re released?** A: The summer months are the best time of the year since butterflies like super warm muggy weather. We usually order this kit in June but for the first time we ordered one of these kits in April, for Easter this year. Our butterflies are hatching today as we speak and I am a little worried about the weather, luckily next week will be in the 80’s where we live and they should survive... I have already saw a few monarchs out flying around... the process of when the caterpillars first arrive to when you release the butterflies from their cage is about a 3-4 week process so I would say right now would be ok to order. **Q: Will a butterfly still develop if the chrysalis fell off the lid?** A: I had 2 fall off the lid and both developed. I used the tweezers to place one of them in the crook of a branch. One of the butterflies had a damaged wing but it still lived and fluttered around. We really enjoyed watching the process. He said he wanted "butterflies", so I thought this would be cool gift. At first, when they were caterpillars, he wasn't too interested, but they grew pretty quickly and then formed their cocoons. After that he would check them every day to see if they turned into butterflies yet. Finally they did and he was so excited. He got to put a couple of his orange slices in the net to fee them. After a couple of days he said goodbye and got to let them go in his yard. The whole process took about 3 weeks from when the package arrived to the release. The container for the caterpillars was perfect, they just stayed in there and did their thing until they were cocoons so no one had to touch them.
