By late 2015, the tank was severely overstocked with 60 platies and about 30 mollies (they did this themselves), even though in a year's time I had given away easily 150 fry. So in November I got a 60 gallon, and I set it up for my platies. I added 9 small cory cats. It has live plants and runs a Magnum 220 canister and a Tetra Whisper 40 filters. Despite my best efforts, about 10 days ago this tank had a severe and rapid ich outbreak. On Friday they were asymptomatic. On Sunday I woke up to 8 dead platies and 7 more died soon after. The survivors had varying degrees of infestation. So I pulled the sickest fish, about 15, and I put them in a running 15 gallon I keep reserved for hospital/quarantine. I turned the heat up to 82, added 1 tsp salt per gallon and treated with Protozin. I did the same for the 60 gallon. I shut off the Tetra Whisper. I shut off the Magnum 220 for 1-2 hours after dosing, but left it running otherwise. I know carbon absorbs medication but I couldn't risk an ammonia spike to already sick fish. I had no more losses and everyone recovered. My plants did fine and Protozin didn't stain the sealant and gravel the way other malachite green products do.
