I did buy and place a rug pad under it (which is recommended), as it is situated under the front of a side chair in my living room. Even then, however, it only took an inexpensive 2' x 4' pad to secure the rug. As far as I am concerned, this is a nice looking rug, not cheap at all with strong colors and appears to be of durable manufacture. I love that not only are the squares different colors, some are a different kind of carpet (higher pile). I think it gives it depth, and a nice feel when walking on it. The colors are rich, it rolls out flat and ready to use without any hassle. I am thinking about buying this in a smaller size for in front of our front door I like it so much. When we first moved, we were on a tight budget and bought a VERY inexpensive rug from walmart and it was awful. The backing left white powder every where, it matted horribly, and just felt cheap on your feet. This rug is such an upgrade for us from that. It is everything that I was hoping it would be, and maybe a little more. Ours was flawless, and a few weeks later still looks new (after being walked/crawled/jumped/stuff dragged on it). Vacuums up nice.
