Just the right number of pieces for him to not lose interest. Weirdly, we had two extra puzzle pieces in our box which were identical to pieces that we already used. We also bought the seahorse puzzle which I enjoyed putting together but was sad to find out that 3 pieces were missing. Contacted the manufacturer and never heard back. So sad because it is such a fun puzzle.
