It holds 16 oz. **Q: is it 500ml or 550ml?** A: According to Zojirushi's website, it's 0.5L (500 mL) http://www.zojirushi.com/products/sweae **Q: Can you remove parts of the lid so that you can clean the thread?** A: Yes **Q: So what's the deal with this "lid set?" I can't figure out what function it accomplishes...** A: Its a check valve that allows air into the container when the contents cool. It apparently solves a problem I never had with a vacuum bottle, that leaving it to cool would make it difficult to remove the screw-top lid. Despite the overkill in complexity, it's still a great container, and keeps soup and stews hot for hours. I'm really happy with the purchase.
