It's a major source of electrical fires and the primary reason why the electrical code now requires new installations to use arc fault circuit breakers that detect the failing insulation and shut off the power. When speaker wires are run under the carpet the fault power is limited only by the output power of the amplifier. Any audio amplifier you'd buy 14AWG speaker wire for can deliver far more than enough power for failing insulation to build up heat and ignite a fire under a carpet. Amplifiers don't pass the high frequency current noise of a developing fault to the power line so an arc fault circuit interrupter won't shut off the power.
