Spool is designed for wire/cable. If you cannot make rope attachment to spool work start off with short bit wire on spool make loop in wire & attach rope to wire & its ready to tighten . **Q: Are these compatible with the tightener tool from tractor supply or should I purchase a different one to fit these?** A: From what I've seen they are all the same design, try the one from Tractor supply it should work just fine. I used it on pretty heavy barbed wire, and it worked well. The only thing I didn't like, using it on an existing fence was the fact that you had to cut the wire to attach it to the tensioner. I know it was designed for electric fence wire or corner post brace wire, but with a few alterations, I was able to tighten an existing barbed wire fence without having to cut it. The trick is to make a steeple out of heavy gauge wire that will fit through the two holes in the spool to trap the wire so it will wind up as you work the rachet. I also ground a slot in the front of the bracket that holds the spool so it would slide over the wire for stability. Pics included.
