I have model building experience. I've been building models since I was 8 years old and I'm 35 now. I am also a bit of a perfectionist. It took me roughly 3 hours to assemble this model to my satisfaction. A bit of advice: 1) Get some flat tipped tweezers for twisting and bending tabs. 2) Get some modeling cutters (they are like miniature wire cutters but are flat on one side and very pointy) to remove the pieces from the metal sheet. 3) You will need wood dowels of varying diameters for shaping and forming curves and circles. Once you see the set you can determine what size to buy. I buy mine from a model store but a hardware store like The Home Depot also sells these. 4) A magnifying glass is useful but not a must. 5) You will need to be patient and gentle when building these metal models. Bend on the folds too many times and they will break just like any metal does when you bend it back and forth too many times. The surfaces scratch easy because they are polished so don't get too close with the tweezers when twisting and bending the tabs. These are the most challenging models I have made to date but they are rewarding if you can complete one flawlessly. I have completed about 30 or so of these models. Definitely not something for a beginner. Good luck. **Q: What are the approximate finished dimensions? If I want to buy this for a gift and give a plastic display case with it.** A: stem to stern 5.25 inches width 2.5 inches height 2.5 +/-0.2 inches **Q: is there a display case that u can recommend for the star trek star ships? the stand broke and i want to display them properly.** A: I don't know. I've never gotten to put it together. The directions are not very clear and it's more complicated than I expected. **Q: How durable is this? Is the construction pretty solid?** A: As you assemble it according to the instructions and take care of it, yes is pretty solid. Of course it is not a toy for kids.
