They DO hunt other birds, but usually from the ground. **Q: is this feeder pole mountable?** A: No, and the squirrels can easily get to it if it’s hanging from a shepherds pole **Q: Can this feeder be used for thistle seed?** A: I don’t know specifically about thistle seed but it works great for other small seeds. You can return it if it doesn’t work **Q: What happened? I had some birds the first few days, but nothing sense. The feeder is 3/4 full, nothing is eating the seed. It seemed to work at first?** A: the pegs on this feeder are 1 inch. On my other feeders they're at least 1` 1/2 inches long. I replaced the feeding holes and pegs with ones from a broken feeder I had and now the feeder works just fine. Peg length matters.
