There are three other ingredients added to it, though I don't know if the amounts are provided in percentages or weights. (Check the closeup of label.) Thus, the contents of the bottle are less than 100% aloe vera, but only slightly less - my guess would be less than 1%, so in other words, 99+% of aloe vera. The added ingredients are carageenan (a thickening agent), citric acid (pH stabilizer), and potassium sorbate (a preservative). The last two ingredients are added in tiny, trace amounts. I'm not sure how much thickener is needed to change the aloe vera juice into a gel. Carageenan, variously known also as Irish moss and Agar-agar, is extracted from a type of seaweed, and has been used, apparently quite safely, as a food thickener in many cultures for hundreds of years. In recent years some concerns have been raised about its safety after research with rats indicated potential health problems, though contradictory findings from different studies leave inconclusive results, especially considering that the intestinal tract of rodents is so dissimilar to that of humans. If you have concerns, you might want to buy aloe vera in the juice form, rather than gel. Regarding preservatives: most are bad for health, even dangerous in some cases. Potassium sorbate is the safest preservative to use, in my opinion, and you will find it as the only preservative used in high quality consumables and organic products. Aloe vera is very perishable, hence the need to use a preservative and a pH stabilizer. Citric acid is also very safe; it's a naturally occurring substance in citruses and many other fruits and vegetables. Bottom line is that this product is probably very safe to eat or drink as well as use on the skin or to make personal care products, lotions, etc. I say this with confidence as a holistic therapist and as someone who has used it for many years. Very good for health and immune system to take on a daily basis - a tablespoon in a glass of water, especially when combined with 2 teaspoons of Bragg's apple cider vinegar. Cleansing and supportive to the digestive system, the liver, the colon, and the lymphatic & immune systems. Will heal burns quickly, both sunburn and burns from cooking/fires. But again, to use caution you could stick with the juice instead of gel, or use the gel only topically but not internally. Good luck! **Q: Is this the aloe gel or juice?** A: It's a gel.
