Cross the misanthropy and super-intelligence of Artemis Fowl dressed as a goth and surrounded by cats, add some horror memes (golems, spirits) and you would get close to Emily.Emily is a spunky supergenius but she doesn't always get it right, that's humanizing. when things go wrong, she thinks her way out. It's a good empowering book for girls, but I think accessible for boys as well, as Emily is pretty boss. (no barbie memes here). Emily plays a lot of pranks, and this book explores her dark side and how it is important to her, how it balances her personality. IMO that's a good message for kids on the cusp of puberty wondering what their brains are up to. The story takes a bit to get going but has some nice twists (really twisty ones), a lot of flavor and action, and a fast-paced quick reading style that does not bog down.The book does take a while get going as Emily procrastinates instead of packing house. There is some setup there but IMO it took a while to get going. Once it starts moving though the authors ramp up the tension nicely throughout the book. Even for a jaded old adult like me, it was an enjoyable read. Seeing 'retarded' was a bit of a surprise, that word is *really* out of favor these days, at least on the West coast. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strange but cute *by L***N on Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2015* I love Emily the Strange, but this book was not as great as the first one. I felt like the story was much more drawn out, the cats are not a huge part of this book (and I love the cats, so having them missing for much of the book was a let down) and there wasn't as much art as compared to the first one either, and the art can be very beautiful when it's there. I felt like this book was just thrown together and that no one really took the time to write a good, flowing story. Even the artwork felt rushed instead of like in the first book where the art was very well done.
