Without them the bar's diameter is too small and is very painful to use when I go to my max lifting weight. I used to use cut up barbell pads but those are too thick and make balancing the dumbbell trickier. This product spreads the weight making most of the pain disappear and yet aren't so thick that it makes gripping the bar or balancing it difficult. One very annoying thing is that the logo is depressed into them, so you will feel that cutting into your hands a bit when using heavier weights.
