The tube can go on either side depending on your preference. There is a lot of storage space with this pack without making the bag itself big or bulky. It is comfortable to wear and didn't grind down on my shoulders. The design to allow your back to to get some air actually works really well. Do you still get some wet back shirt? The design and weight distribution are outstanding, as is the number and location of storage pockets. Don't waste your $$ on a cheaper backpack; I did and regretted it. I bought this to replace a cheaper (non-CamelBak) water backpack we purchased 2 yrs ago. It was a pain from the start: hard to clean, the mouthpiece frequently leaked, etc. The final straw was when the mouthpiece came apart while hiking up a 14er with my son - about the worst place to have a water-pack malfunction!! We've had a smaller one of these for yrs and have never experienced any problems with it, so this time I paid to get the quality we needed.
