The shiny surface has two functions: If heating season, the shiny surface has less heat radiation into the attic than any other surface color. When cooling, that shiny surface reflects -reduces the absorption - of heat radiation. **Q: Want to insulate the kitchen fan exhaust pipe; is this an appropriate product for that use? If not, what should I use?** A: This would work using aluminum foil tape for the seams. **Q: How many sheets?** A: This is a roll of insulation 12 inches wide -- 15 foot long and 2 inches thick, there may be sheets of material in the 2 inches but I never counted them -- it is just 2 inches total thickness **Q: Can this be used to wrap an aluminum dryer vent tube to prevent condensation on the outside of the tube during the winter?** A: I used it to insult my bathroom fan duct running through the attic. I had a problem with condensation dripping down into the bathroom.
