This is my first reed instrument and overall I am very pleased. The duduk was shipped shortly after ordering and arrived within a few days. My immediate impression of the instrument was positive in it's appearance. I did not want to leave a review immediately after as there is a honeymoon period with any instrument. The real test for me is seeing how it holds up against recording, as I buy and collect instruments for the purpose of incorporating into my music. As is implied, I have a working knowledge of music and can play other instruments fairly well (guitar, piano as primary instruments and an assortment of others from harmonica, to flute, to didgeridoo and percussion instruments less efficiently). Given that this is my first reed instrument, I had some concerns I would not be able to pick it up with relative ease. This was quelled shortly after looking up some duduk lessons on Youtube, which admittedly were easier to grasp than the PDF document sent digitally with this product. That is not to say the PDF is poor, but it is more geared towards those with an understanding of musical notation and sight reading, which I am not the best at. From what I have gathered learning to play the duduk over the past few weeks is that this is a challenging instrument. Actually creating some noise and getting some really basic melodies is not particularly hard once you learn how to use the reed and finger the duduk. This immediate gratification is important to me personally as it gives me some semblance of what the end result of practice could sound like, just better. Another concern I had when buying was whether or not this was tuned properly. Overall, it appears to be as I have begun using a tone generator to create the tone of each note in the scale. One struggle with the duduk is learning how to achieve this in tune sound repeatedly, and adjusting as it falls out of tune if the reed is too open or too closed. Playing half hole notes to achieve additional notes not found in the scale is also a challenge, but admittedly is more a reflection of myself as a complete novice at this point in time. As it is, I have experimented with some basic records of this instrument and the sound quality is good. Some friends who have heard me play it have complimented the tone. I quite enjoy the range, as in one register it almost sounds like a saxiphone or brass instrument, but when learning to play in a more controlled manner I have been able to get the more reserved, warm, flute-like tone we all love from the duduk. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase. Keep in mind, I give this duduk a 5 star rating on it's own merit, and not when compared to other duduks on the market. I have not played another duduk, and admit that there are likely "better" sounding ones available. But, if you are only shelling out ~$100 dollars for an instrument, you are admittedly coming in at a low price point and an entry level instrument. Given this and that I have played terrible $100 dollar acoustic guitars, the price of admission is more than fair and the instrument quality far surpasses what I would expect from a beginner instrument. Years ago I played bagpipes at the beginners level, so I had some idea how double reeds were to be set up. These are like my chanter reeds on steroids. I am getting the most amazing sounds from it. YouTube videos were very helpful in getting me off and running. It has an ancient voice that is very haunting! I am very pleased with my purchase. The clarinet adaptor is right on pitch and crystal clear in tone. By using a 1.5 alto reed it is even better. The double reeds produce the loudest tone and are capable of great variations in sound. I can get very powerful clear notes with a touch of tremolo with both the clarinet mouth piece and the double reeds. This is my new favorite travel instrument. I am used to playing the Native American flute and thought that the clarinet adapter would be helpful. I personally find it easier to play with the reed how it traditionally is played but it’s nice to have the option to switch to the clarinet. The Duduk does require a lot more breathing than what I’m used to. However, it has a wonderful deep sound and there are many YouTube videos to learn how to play. Very nice and interesting instrument.
