I do take caution to make sure my fingers are never in the way where if it should go off it would strike my fingers but that is just common sense. Once set it doe not go off so easily that moving it would set it off. Anything caught is in big trouble but like any trap it depends on how they set it off. If it hits their limb well they are not going to die but if it hits their head or bday they either are dead or will be shortly. They stand up to being outside but I chose the brass traps by accident. So not sure if they will get some rust if out side for a long time. I am not planning to keep these out for a long time and will be using a cover to keep it out of direct rain not to protect the trap but from videos it is a good way to catch voles. I suppose I will get a few field mice along the way as well. So let the voles be aware my yard is not a good place to set up housekeeping. Review: Work well with the snap alert system - This item works quite well with the Heddel mouse trap alert system. I have a Heddel mouse trap alert system that I normally use with my mouse trap. It keep the killed rodent from decomposing and stinking up the whole place. But the Heddel mouse trap alert system does not fit a regular wooden rat trap due to the thickness of the base. This item have a thin enough base that the Heddel mouse trap alert system fit this rat trap, even thought it was design for mouse trap, and alert me of a killed rat before it decomposed. In addition, the saw tooth base keep any rat from escaping the trap, unlike the regular wooden rat trap that let the last rat that was caught escape from the trap. And the color black hopefully will make it so inconspicuous that the rats will not be alert by it's appearance and it will fall for the baits without being alert by the trap itself. Update: 6/6/2020 It appears that even this trap can not hold the giant rat I have. The rat just lift himself out of the trap like he did with the Victor rat trap, even though he left a trail of blood behind. I thought he died elsewhere but the Wyze camera show the rat coming back and was wary of the area where the trap was at. I now use the Duke 110 conibear trap that is so strong that I could not set it without a special tool that compress the spring. So if I can not compress the spring, not even the giant rat can lift the spring to get out. I can not find the Duke 110 hear on desertcart any more, even I purchase it from desertcart a couple of week ago, so I purchase 2 more from Ebay instead. So look else where if you have a giant rat and not this Made2catch rat trap. Update: 10/8/2020 I was able to cat the big rat that got away last time. The trick is when you screw down the trap to the board, do not screw it down so tight but to let at least 1/8" gap so the trap have free play to twist around when the rat struggle. This way the rat can twist and turn all it want but will not be able to lift the trap arm to get out. Rats smarter than is convenient.
