## Description

Together with the updated S-Phyre XC shoes from 2018, Shimano has released a new XTR pedal. The XTR M9120 pedal body is made of aluminium and the spindle is made of chromoly steel. Shimano designed the XTR M9120 to play well with its AM and ME shoes that are trail and enduro compatible. The contact surface of the pedal is wider and longer than the previous version to achieve a better shoe and pedal interface. and they are of course an SPD pedal.

Sulla mia prima mountain bike, dopo una breve esperienza con i pedali con gabbietta, ho montato gli Shimano SPD 747 . . . perfetti! Era l’anno 1992 e all’epoca non tanti amavano avere il piede bloccato (come pure le forcelle ammortizzate), dopo qualche anno ed alcune esperienze con altri marchi, ritorno a Shimano ed è subito intesa totale. Ho montato questi pedali su di una e-mtb, prima avevo i Crank Brothers Mallet Enduro, belli, ampia piattaforma con 6 pin per lato, aggancio facile, sgancio abbastanza facile, ma non rapidissimo, occorre ruotare il piede e venendo dal sistema SPD ho trovato qualche difficoltà, credevo di abituarmi, ma in situazioni di emergenza lo sgancio non è così immediato, almeno per me e dopo tre cadute con bici rimasta attaccata ai piedi ho capito che non avrei imparato tanto presto e così ho deciso di ritornare a Shimano. Ero indeciso tra il modello XT (PD-M8120) e gli XTR (PD-M9120), alla fine ho preso questi perché disponibili subito e poi sono ancora più belli, materiali premium, made in Japan, gabbia di appoggio leggermente più ampia con qualche fresatura superficiale in più per aumentare l’aderenza, minore spessore e dovrebbero essere un poco più scorrevoli. Packaging molto curato, il pedale sinistro è contenuto in una busta trasparente con scritte in rosso e quello destro con scritte in blu, peccato però che poi che sugli assi non si sia alcun riferimento L/R, l’unico segno sono due piccole tacche sul pedale sinistro in corrispondenza della filettatura del perno (questa proprio non la capisco, sarà un vezzo dei progettisti). Nelle caratteristiche vengono dichiarati per mtb enduro, trail e all mountain; il peso rilevato è di 398g alla coppia (dichiarato 398g), dimensioni piattaforma circa 99,2x72,1 mm, spessore 16,9 mm (sono davvero molto sottili e la sensazione di sensibilità è molto elevata), distanza centro pedale-pedivella 55 mm. Come per tutti i pedali SPD Shimano, anche questi vengono forniti con le classiche tacchette nere SM-SH51 che permettono lo sgancio solo con rotazione, per avere lo sgancio multidirezionale bisogna montare le tacchette argento SM-SH56 da comprare a parte. Presi in mano i pedali sono molto belli e la qualità risulta evidente da molti dettagli: l’asse, il meccanismo del sistema SPD, la piattaforma con le fresature . . tutto denota materiali di primo livello sapientemente lavorati e il costo se può sembrare elevato è pienamente giustificato. Si fissano alle pedivelle con una chiave a brugola da 8 mm (la chiave a forchetta da 15 mm si usa sempre meno), la molla del meccanismo SPD si regola con una chiave a brugola da 2,5 mm (non da 3 mm come per l’ XT). Dopo averli montatati ho fatto immediatamente un giro, mi sembrava di averli da anni ed ho ritrovato la semplicità e sicurezza del sistema SPD Shimano: aggancio immediato, il piede trova subito la tacchetta, clack ed è agganciato, lo sgancio è altrettanto semplice e rapido, in tutte le direzioni, con rotazione, torsione, tirando il piede verso l’alto; inizialmente la durezza della molla era quasi al minimo, adesso a metà e mi trovo molto bene. Non ho più avuto problemi di sgancio nelle situazioni impreviste, prima con i Mallet Enduro pedalando su salite ripide, strette, con sassi e radici se perdevo l’equilibrio e mi piantavo non sempre riuscivo a sganciare il piede e in alcune situazioni ho preso delle belle botte, con i pedali Shimano XTR lo sgancio è immediato e anche la ripartenza è altrettanto facile tirando un poco col piede ancora agganciato e riagganciando subito dopo il piede che era a terra: ottimi davvero, se li avessi montati subito avere risparmiato soldi e cadute. Unico dubbio che può venire è nel caso si voglia tirare verso l’alto la bici in alcuni passaggi, per superare alberi o radici, o nei dossi, però finora non si sono mai sganciati e la bici pesa circa 25 kg e la molla ha una durezza media: anche qui ottimi. La piattaforma è ampia, distribuisce molto bene la pressione dello sforzo alla scarpa, anche se non ci sono pin l’aderenza trovo sia buona aiutata dalle fresature posteriori sulla gabbia, gli ampi spazi permettono a fango ed eventuali sassetti rimasti attaccati sotto alle scarpe di venire scaricati bene. Concludendo ritengo questi pedali all’altezza delle varie situazione fuoristrada che si affrontano in mtb, il livello generale di qualità è molto elevato, assemblaggio e finiture perfette, aggancio e sgancio rapidi ed intuitivi, quando agganciati la sensazione di stabilità e sicurezza sono molto buone e la pressione sulla scarpa è ben distribuita: ottimi ed il prezzo è più che adeguato.
