You aren't supposed to smell the salts. It has really helped me. In the beginning I used it up to 2 hours a day because I was experiencing reactive airway disease from my two surgeries. Be sure to breathe out through your nose so you don't get the salt damp from your breath. I tried cheaper versions, but went back to this one(I leant my original out to a friend to help her sick kids).It’s so cleansing and knocked my respiratory cold out flat!! I also use it for sinus by blocking one nostril and put the mouthpiece up to the other nostril and inhale so it goes all throughout my sinus cavity. This is sturdy & the way the cavity is constructed I can really smell the salt in the air coming through which is what you need like you are near the ocean(salty air).
