SUGGESTION: I believe that if it were possible to refresh the design in such a way where the antenna(s) were printed on the edge of the device or somehow located behind the batteries this may improve communication as the batteries themselves may be reflecting some of the signal away from the lock perhaps. Or making the keypad slightly larger so it could be used with gloves on more easily, further separating the distance between the users fingers (which absorb bluetooth) may allow for better use ability and transmission. Also the size would make typing in codes take a fraction of a second longer, thereby fixing the issues I've read others having with entering the codes in quicker than the keypads power effecient cpu can process them. You could probably get away with 10 ft if your door is wood, otherwise I suggest no more than 5 ft. When testing, be sure to test multiple times. You can check the signal on your phone with a bluetooth scanning app when the keypad is in setup mode. A RSSI of less than -70dBm will not work reliably. **Q: What if it malfunctions, how do you get in?** A: My keypad stopped functioning after a couple of months. Unless you use the app on your phone or carry your key too, you will be out of luck when the keypad malfunctions. The only reason I purchased the keypad was precisely so as not to have to carry my phone or the key. Please note that getting a replacement shipped from August is a tedious and slow process despite the fact that approximately 25% of the reviews are complaining about the same problem - the keypad malfunctions very often. **Q: Are the numbers backlit?** A: Yes... I have the August circle-shaped wifi smart lock in my rented apartment with no bridge. So renter friendly because it replaces the back not the front so the landlord still uses a regular key to get inside. I have my lock set up to automatically unlock when I get close with my phone but it doesn't always work or I don't always have my phone. You can set up codes for individual people in the app 4-6 digits and control times of access. Pushing the august button locks the door. There is a backlight that is motion activated but I have it turned off in the app because there is a lighted hallway where it is put. You do have to be in bluetooth range to edit the settings of the keypad or add/edit codes. However say you're away from home and want to remove access for someone, you can delete them all together with your lock connected to wifi and their code will not work anymore. I have someone come clean for me and it is so nice to have her be able to get in. Or I can also give temporary codes to people like the Walmart+ driver or someone who is staying the week with me.
