Review: Love it - first unit I got from desertcart warehouse deals was non functional, perhaps it was the reason someone had returned it, no backlight or bluetooth signals detected from it even after changing the batteries. I did however notice what seemed to be after damage on the circuit board inside the unit. So just be aware that if you buy one from desertcart warehouse to make sure it works, and that it's not tied to someone else's account still, at you won't be able to add it to yours until they disconnect it from theirs and type in the unique reset code that August app sends you when this is done. (I know only from research as I thought this was the issue, but it wasn't until I got it exchange through desertcart warehouse that I realized it was just that the unit was not functional as soon as the replacement lit up in its brilliant red backlight when I put the batteries in.) ever since I got the exchanged unit from desertcart I've had no real issues. The unit reports low bluetooth signal but has never had an issue connecting quickly and reliably, I imagine it's very difficult to connect via bluetooth Low Energy spec and being in the difficulty position of attempting to communicate with a lock that is behind a (in my case metal, metal reflects RF energy) door, plus a wooden frame (wood absorbs RF energy, as does any organic compound) and a cinder block or brick wall plus insulation material (reflections from radiant barrier insulation and stone based building materials including drywall, and lead based outdoor paints which all reflect RF, and interior and interior wall paints which absorb rf as they are typically organic based (oil is organic and absorbs rf energy) with a double whammy because paint is also designed to be fire retardant making them semi reflective rf wise, then and in a humid Florida environment (water absorbs RF energy the best/most and people are mostly water so your hands near the keypad after entering the code will hamper connectivity too. not to mention that's how microwave ovens work which just the exact same frequency band range of 2.4GHz, and WiFi is also 2.4-2.49GHz so there's that constant noise coming from every device and WiFi router and bluetooth device) I imagine this is why the keypad is made of such a lightweight plastic as anything sturdier would require an external antenna, or a more powerful radio which would make it not possible to be battery powered. As it is, bluetooth le devices are typically powered by coin batteries, think Tile. Which get a year or life via bluetooth le or more. So 2 AA is definitely in there because they had the space to do so, to overcome the above difficulties stated above, and for longevity. SUGGESTION: I believe that if it were possible to refresh the design in such a way where the antenna(s) were printed on the edge of the device or somehow located behind the batteries this may improve communication as the batteries themselves may be reflecting some of the signal away from the lock perhaps. Or making the keypad slightly larger so it could be used with gloves on more easily, further separating the distance between the users fingers (which absorb bluetooth) may allow for better use ability and transmission. Also the size would make typing in codes take a fraction of a second longer, thereby fixing the issues I've read others having with entering the codes in quicker than the keypads power effecient cpu can process them.
Review: Great Product - The August Smart Lock is easy to install and integrates seamlessly with existing deadbolts, allowing you to keep your old keys. The app is intuitive, offering features like auto-unlock and guest access, which are convenient. However, the lock depends on batteries and requires a Wi-Fi Bridge for remote access, which can be a drawback. Overall, it’s a stylish and reliable option for modernizing home security.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it have to be in close proximity to the smart lock? i don't care for the looks of it and i'd like to mount it around 20 feet away.**
A: The intended use case is for a few feet max and will work with metal / security doors. You could probably get away with 10 ft if your door is wood, otherwise I suggest no more than 5 ft. When testing, be sure to test multiple times. You can check the signal on your phone with a bluetooth scanning app when the keypad is in setup mode. A RSSI of less than -70dBm will not work reliably.

**Q: What if it malfunctions, how do you get in?**
A: My keypad stopped functioning after a couple of months. Unless you use the app on your phone or carry your key too, you will be out of luck when the keypad malfunctions. The only reason I purchased the keypad was precisely so as not to have to carry my phone or the key. Please note that getting a replacement shipped from August is a tedious and slow process despite the fact that approximately 25% of the reviews are complaining about the same problem - the keypad malfunctions very often.

**Q: Are the numbers backlit?**
A: Yes... They light up in red after you touch the keypad. First number can be tricky (it doesn't detect motion or anything like that), but you can hit the bottom button to activate the lights. I'm pretty happy with it.

**Q: How many digits can/must be used in the code? I need to be able to use codes more robust than just 4 digits.**
A: I got all my codes set up with 6 digits; not sure what the max is since 6 digits is just cumbersome enough for me to want to shorten it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10 Gamechanger

Awesome. Just works. Bluetooth always stays connected. I have the August circle-shaped wifi smart lock in my rented apartment with no bridge. So renter friendly because it replaces the back not the front so the landlord still uses a regular key to get inside. I have my lock set up to automatically unlock when I get close with my phone but it doesn't always work or I don't always have my phone. You can set up codes for individual people in the app 4-6 digits and control times of access. Pushing the august button locks the door. There is a backlight that is motion activated but I have it turned off in the app because there is a lighted hallway where it is put. You do have to be in bluetooth range to edit the settings of the keypad or add/edit codes. However say you're away from home and want to remove access for someone, you can delete them all together with your lock connected to wifi and their code will not work anymore. I have someone come clean for me and it is so nice to have her be able to get in. Or I can also give temporary codes to people like the Walmart+ driver or someone who is staying the week with me. This device is reliable, lets me give access to my apartment to whoever easily, and gives me peace of mind to not be locked out of my apartment.
