Poignant collection of iconic fashion artistry through film
I purchased this as a gift for my daughter, who loves film, fashion, and fashion in film history. I only leafed through it in curiosity, but it opened her eyes to a whole new realm of possibilities when it comes to her interests, talents, and passions.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, BUT NO UGLY
THE GOOD, THE BAD, BUT NO UGLY:CHRISTOPHER LAVERTY'S FASHION IN FILMby Frederic KahlerHardcover, 11.8" x 9.05" @ $90.00Pocket Edition (ppbk, pictured) 8.6" x 6.5" @ $16.00(Both are 224 pages)Is it any wonder the late Mr. Laverty was so excited to get his book published? It's a lavish read -- obviously a labor of love -- from an author who's likely the most couture-savvy straight man to grace the halls of Hollywood and Harrods. His tome covers the influences in the movies of 49 fashion designers and fashion houses, from Agnes B to Yves St. Laurent. He does not cover the legion of costume designers, only fashion designers who have designed for films. He pulls no punches. No one is spared his oh-so-refreshing neutrality. And if you're sublime, he tells the world with his fine syntax and choice in words. I personally, with glee, guffawed at his coverage of Olympics darling Ralph Lauren (ne Lifshitz), the relentless wannabe who tried repeatedly and failed repeatedly (facing lawsuits) to claim credit for cinema costume design. Finally, someone who sees him for what he is: a master of some fine tailoring but nothing more than what Tommy Hilfiger now handles. Both men's clothes are almost universally Made in China, including Lauren's sponsorship of America's Team at the Paris Olympics.Opportunistic, melting-pot English, unlike other major world languages, has about a zillion words for each concept. "Good" is fine, nice, neat, acceptable, adequate, satisfactory, up to scratch, ethical, clean, principled, moral, in order, keen, virtuous, exemplary, upstanding, quality, brill, smashing, ducky, swell, bonzer, capital, corky, lively, cheerful, festive, amusing, delightful, pleasing, agreeable, enjoyable, frabjous, ripping and sweet. Mr. Laverty seems blessed to know which words to choose for his descriptions and assessments without ever being redundant or insular. FASHION IN FILM reads quite well. This is a difficult book to put down! Now onto the pros and cons, and they're polarizing. The coffee table version is cost-prohibitive at nearly $100. You'll find no respite at amazon with used copies; they, too, start at $90 and inexplicably go up from there. Due to unusual cyber activity, alibris is unavailable; it's currently offline. I happened to find a copy at alibris for $60, including shipping. I'll return my pocket edition to amazon (more on that later). If you're wanting to outfit your personal library with books on Orry-Kelly, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Edith Head, Gucci, Hermes, Walter Plunkett, Irene, Savile Row, Tom Ford, Prada and Jean-Paul Gaultier, then shelling out a C-note is going to hurt your purse. But FASHION IN FILM greatly covers, not in so much detail, but covers a slew of designers and houses. What he writes is pithy and en point. He wastes no time with flowers. Here you get the meat. Then there is the chic and portable pocket edition at just under $16. It's easy to carry, great for the beach or bus ride, and it won't kill you if your ex-lover steals it on the way out. Both versions are chock-full of awesome photographs, mostly in color. Flipping through the book is akin to viewing through a kaleidoscope. The printing of the images is very good. All of which is fine for the price if you happen to be illiterate. You see, you cannot read the thing.I about fell out of my chair reaching for my reading glasses. Shrinking the coffee-table edition down to a more manageable size has sacrificed its print integrity. Most pages are black type on white, but the white on black pages suffer from some bleeding. Anyone of a certain age is most likely going to require spectacles or one of those 5 x 7 magnifying sheets "as seen on TV." Yes, you can read Mr. Laverty's words, but it's a bit of a chore. I would much rather be able to scan large pages as I digest his delicious prose. So, as with so many things, the pocket edition is wasted on the youth. They'll have no problems reading, but how long will you save the book? It's definitely a keeper and a fine reference book. I certainly intend to refer to it constantly as I continue my posts at my Facebook's Hollywood Costumes group. My gut says to go for it. Pay the 90 bucks. It'll impress your friends, the very ones who didn't buy you the book in the first place! Or, if you're lucky, you'll find it online for just over half the price. Now I can use my savings for a couple of other fashion books. You did well, Christopher Laverty, and your progeny should be proud. You are surely missed. Who knows what tomes lay still in your unique brain. Voila!

Si te gusta la moda y el cine es para ti.
Fue un regalo para una amiga que es amante de la moda y le gusta mucho el cine. Quedo muy contenta con el libro. Claramente el libro trae muchos clásicos, tanto de películas como de diseñadores.

Such a glamorous book!
A stunning coffee table book. I love the black and white photo of Aubrey Hepburn on the front. It glams up my sitting room. The lettering is a gorgeous gold colour too. Would recommend.
